5 Guidelines for Choosing a Blog Niche:
1. Consider your interest, also known as your Passion
2. Go for Low Competition Niches
3. Consider your Area of Specialization
4. Consider Future Relevance of the Topic
5. Consider if Your Niche is Profitable?
When it comes to niche selection, many newcomers make the following mistakes. Allow me to jot down a few of them in more details.
1. Entering a generic niche:
A generic niche is a broad niche with high competition that is also very broad. For example, a health niche, a technology niche, or a fashion niche.
A better way to investigate it is to concentrate on a specialized narrow niche within a broad niche. An example is Online Business, you can break it down to Blogging, SEO, Content Marketing and more.
This alone will ensure the success of your blog in terms of popularity, traffic, and money.
Furthermore, because you will be spending a lot of time researching, learning, and writing about one specific topic, you will become a specialized expert.
2. Fewer options for monetization:
Many new bloggers begin by focusing solely on AdSense. This is primarily due to a lack of information, and it should not be the only criterion for selecting a profitable niche.
I recommend my Blog Post on "How To Monetize Your Blog In 2022 and Beyond And Earn $5,000-$10,000 Per Month"
You should broaden your horizons and concentrate on a niche that offers more monetization opportunities. This could take the form of (but not limited to):
- Advertisers who advertise directly
- Affiliate Programs
- Online classes

3. Failure Occurs in the Absence of Research:
This could take up to 2-3 days before you can start your blog. However, just doing this exercise will help you validate your idea, and your decision will not be solely based on passion and gut feelings.
On the contrary, having a gut feeling isn't necessarily a bad thing, as long as you've been well-nourished with the right information prior to launching your blog.
4. Concentrating on the Wrong Market:
"It's okay, I'll make it a success," such a thought often leads to frustration in the near future, and eventually leads to you quitting working on your blog.
When you realize you're working in the wrong niche, you often have the option of starting a new website (in a new niche) and making it work for you. In fact, your second blog may be a success because you will be transferring your knowledge from the previous one to the new one. If you realize your old niche is too saturated or you no longer have an interest in it, don't be afraid to leave it and start a new one.
5. Failure to begin due to a lack of a niche:
Even if it means you chose the wrong niche, you can always change your mind later. The key here is to avoid becoming bogged down in the process of niche selection.
What Are the Advantages of Niche Selection?
1. Increased Traffic – Google Favorite:
Because you will be using data to select a niche, the likelihood of you creating a high traffic blog is higher. Furthermore, because you are working in a specific niche, you are more likely to be rewarded by Google in terms of organic traffic.
2. Increased User Loyalty:
Because your blog will be focused on a single topic, your readers will be more likely to return.
You will notice a lower bounce rate, a higher average page load time, and an expansion of your community. This entire process may be slow at first, but one day everything will just change.
3. You Might Be Able to Become an Expert:
Learning is a slow process, but if you devote regular time to learning about one subject on a daily basis, you will eventually rank in the top 1% – 5% of your field. The best part is that you won't even realize you've gained such knowledge because your desire to learn more will never fade. This distinction is mostly noticed by others, or by you, when you compare your recent writings to your older ones.
4. Marketing Has Been Made Easier:
5. Additional Money:
Because of the laser-focused niche, the ads should have a high CTR from the hyper-targeted audience, resulting in maximum mullah. Because I was in a focused niche, one of the niches I worked on netted more than $12000 in a single day. You may or may not get the same result as I did, but you will be far better off than if you start a blog without a niche.
5 Guidelines for Choosing a Blog Niche:
1. Your interest, also known as your passion
Always remember: teaching is the best way to learn!
I do it by making a list of topics about which I am passionate and then running it through the other filters listed below.
This ensures that the niche you choose is not only one in which you are interested, but also one in which you will be profitable in the long run.
2. Low Competition Means Easy Winning:
This is the most important principle to remember when it comes to successful niche selection. Your goal should be to choose a niche that is not overly competitive and has few users interested in it. At the same time, it has the potential to grow over time (See trends in niche selection) to give you a better understanding of this.
3. Your Area of Specialization:
Google made it clear a few years ago that they consider author expertise when ranking a website. A high ranking means you will be rewarded with more organic traffic, which will help you succeed in your blogging endeavor.
In fact, Google went one step further and began de-ranking websites where expertise is unclear, particularly in certain niches such as health, finance, and anything to do with money.
Generic niches such as fashion and technology are doing well right now, but we cannot be certain that this will continue in the near future. When selecting a niche, your qualifications, or official designation (for example, engineer, doctor, or management degree), should be taken into account.
If you don't have one of these, avoid entering a niche where qualification is important. There is a workaround for this situation, but it is not as simple as it appears. So, in addition to your passion, consider a niche in which you can highlight your own expertise or hire expert writers. A workaround is to have an expert review your content (For example, health niche can work with a medical practitioner, to review the content).
4. Future Relevance of the Topic
Checking the trend and ensuring that it has increased over time ensures that you will remain relevant in the future.
There are exceptions when you are working on a micro-niche and have a time horizon of less than 1-2 years for that blog. Google Trends is a good free tool for determining a topic's trend.
Here's how to use Google Trends:
Navigate to Trends.Google.com.
- Enter your niche topic.
- Choose a country as your destination (Ex: Worldwide, India, United States, Australia)
- Choose a year range (Ex: 5 years)
- And Google would show you how user interest in that topic has increased or decreased.
5. Is Your Niche Profitable?
The reason for this is that there are many high-traffic niches that are difficult to monetize. The reason for this is that there aren't enough advertisers interested in advertising in such niches.
Compared to Make Money Online Niche, my niche still performed better for the past 90 days as above.
Although Google AdSense or Media.net are the most common ways to monetize any niche, as I discussed in my how-to make money blogging webinar, there are higher levels of monetization that generate more revenue.
Examine other blogs in a similar niche (broad or narrow) to see how they monetize theirs.
Here are a few things to keep in mind:
- Are they only monetizing through contextual ad networks like AdSense?
- Are there any direct advertisements? If so, what are the various brands?
- Is there any affiliate links on the website?
- Is there anything for sale (courses, eBooks, merchandising)?
- Do they provide consulting services?
This type of research will help you get a head start on your blog business plan.
Finally, for successful niche selection, consider the following:
Before you proceed to the FAQs about niche selection, I want you to be aware of the following:
This guide should be used as a guideline for your niche selection process, but it should not be the only thing you consider. Outliers who think the unthinkable are common, and you should keep this in mind.
Nonetheless, some principles, such as using data to validate your niche selection idea, would ensure that you do not make the same niche selection mistakes as many others.
This guide is intended to teach you the techniques that professionals use to choose a niche. In the real world, you'd have to pay hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars to learn all of this knowledge. You are currently learning this for free; however, if you overlook even one principle of the niche selection process, all of your knowledge will be rendered useless.
If you already have a blog in a specific niche, you can use this guide to refocus it. This way, you will not only ensure your future success, but you will also avoid becoming one of the many bloggers who quit blogging due to a poor niche selection.
Q. Since I am not an expert in anything, how can I start a blog in any niche?
A. Well, teaching is the best way to learn anything. You will improve as long as you apply these principles to find a good niche and start writing about it.
As you progress as a learner, you may find yourself going back to edit older articles, which is perfectly normal. Overall, you don't have to be an expert in any niche to start a blog; you become an expert by learning and writing. In fact, because writing requires more preparation, learning to write leads to better research and learning. Even though the first few months will be difficult for you, you will have a greater impact in the long run.
